Several certifications appear regularly on plant-based leather products. Brands display them prominently. Buyers assume they are markers of quality or environmental integrity. The actual scope of each certification is narrower - and more specific - than that assumption implies.
This post explains what each one verifies, how it is granted, and what it cannot tell you. The aim is not to discredit certifications. They are useful, necessary in their scope, and better than no third-party verification. But "necessary" and "sufficient" are different things, and understanding the gap between them makes you a better reader of product pages.
PETA-approved vegan
PETA's "Approved Vegan" status is a registration, not a test. A brand submits documentation to PETA confirming that the product contains no animal-derived materials. PETA reviews the submission and, if it meets the criteria, adds the brand or product to its approved list and grants use of the badge.
What PETA-approved vegan verifies: the product contains no animal-derived material. No leather, no wool, no down, no silk, no animal glues, no beeswax.
What it does not verify: anything about the material composition beyond the absence of animal inputs. It does not verify what the material is made of. It does not verify durability, lifespan, construction quality, polymer content, or any environmental claim. A PVC bag with no animal inputs is PETA-approved vegan.
PETA-approved vegan is a useful filter if your starting criterion is the absence of animal material. It is not a quality signal.
GRS - Global Recycled Standard
GRS is a certification administered by Textile Exchange, a non-profit that develops standards for more responsible fibre and materials sourcing. The certification verifies two things: first, that a material contains a stated percentage of recycled content; second, that the recycled content can be traced through the supply chain back to its verified source.
What GRS verifies: that recycled material is present in the percentage stated, and that there is a documented chain of custody proving it. A GRS-certified material containing 50% recycled polyester in the backing layer means that 50% has been verified as recycled, with documentation from recycler to manufacturer.
What GRS does not verify: anything about the non-recycled content. A material can be GRS certified and contain significant virgin petroleum-derived content alongside its recycled fraction. GRS also does not verify durability, surface performance, construction quality or environmental claims beyond the recycled content traceability.
The chain-of-custody component is what makes GRS meaningful compared to unverified recycled content claims. A supplier claiming "made with recycled materials" without GRS certification may or may not be telling the truth. A GRS-certified claim has documentation behind it.
ASTM D6866: bio-based content testing
ASTM D6866 is the one most worth understanding in detail, because it is the certification that most directly relates to the "plant-based" claim in plant-based leather.
The test measures bio-based carbon content. It works by detecting the ratio of carbon-14 (a radioactive isotope found in biological material) to carbon-12 (present in both biological and fossil-derived material) within a sample. Carbon-14 is present in recently grown biological material and is absent from fossil-derived material (petroleum, coal), which formed millions of years ago and has fully decayed. The ratio between the two isotopes tells you what percentage of the carbon atoms in the material came from biological sources.
A material tested at 70% bio-based carbon content by ASTM D6866 has 70% of its carbon atoms sourced from biological material, and 30% sourced from fossil-based material. This is a meaningful and verifiable number.
Here is the complication, and it is the most valuable thing in this post. Bio-based carbon content is not the same as composition by weight. A material can have a high ASTM D6866 bio-based percentage and still contain significant polymer content by weight. The two measurements are about different things: one is about the origin of the carbon atoms, the other is about the mass of the material's components.
Consider: the polyol component of a bio-polyurethane is derived from plant oils or sugars, making its carbon bio-based. The isocyanate component is typically petroleum-derived. The resulting polymer contains a mix of bio-based and fossil-based carbon. The D6866 percentage reflects the proportion of bio-based carbon in the final material - not whether the material is primarily plant material by weight.
This is why "80% bio-based" and "contains polyurethane" can both be true about the same material simultaneously. They are not contradictory. They are measuring different things. A brand presenting a high bio-based percentage as evidence that its material "contains almost no synthetic material" is conflating the two measurements.
REACH compliance
REACH is the European Union's regulation for the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals. REACH compliance means a material does not contain listed substances of very high concern above defined thresholds. It is effectively a minimum safety standard for materials sold in the EU.
REACH compliance is important as a baseline - it means the material has been checked against a list of harmful chemicals. But it is frequently stated as a certification when it is actually a self-declaration by the brand, based on documentation from suppliers. Unless there is a named third-party test body and a test certificate with a date, "REACH compliant" on a product page is a statement the brand has made, not one that has been independently tested.
This is not a reason to distrust REACH claims. Most suppliers maintain the documentation required to support them. It is a reason to understand the difference between a third-party test result and a brand statement.
What certifications collectively do not tell you
None of the certifications above tell you anything about:
Durability. A PETA-approved GRS-certified ASTM D6866-tested material can still be a thin scrim with a poor coating that peels within eighteen months. The certifications are about composition and sourcing, not about construction quality or lifespan.
Lifespan. No certification verifies how long a product will last under real use conditions.
How the object is made. Certification of the material says nothing about stitch density, hardware quality, edge finishing, reinforcement at stress points, or any of the construction variables that determine whether a bag lasts.
The three questions to ask any brand
Given what certifications do and do not cover, the questions worth asking a brand are these.
First: what is the material actually composed of, by weight or by layer? Not what certifications it holds - what is in it. A clear answer to this question covers more ground than any certification.
Second: what performance testing has the material undergone - specifically hydrolysis resistance, flex fatigue and abrasion resistance? A certification tells you about sourcing. A test result tells you about performance.
Third: what does the warranty cover and for how long? This is the brand's own statement of confidence in the product's durability, expressed in a way that has financial consequences.
