Plant Leather vs Regular Leather: What's the Difference?

Updated on

Plant leather is a material made from plant-based raw materials rather than animal hide or petroleum plastic. In India, it is emerging as a genuine third option alongside animal leather and PU faux leather, and it is quite different from both. The short version: it looks like leather, wears like leather, and is made a better way.

What is plant-derived leather?

Plant-derived leather is made by processing plant-based fibres and bio-based materials into a flexible, durable sheet. The result is a material that is 98% bio-based, meaning almost all of its content comes from renewable plant sources rather than petrochemicals or livestock.

Across the industry, plant leather is made from a range of raw materials. Common sources include cactus fibre, apple waste, corn and cork, though the exact source varies by manufacturer. What they share is a common aim: a leather-like material that does not depend on cattle farming or synthetic plastic.

Is plant leather real leather?

By traditional definition, real leather means tanned animal hide. So plant leather is not leather in that strict sense. It is a material engineered to look, flex and wear the way leather does, but built from an entirely different starting point.

That said, it is not a paper-thin coating or a cheap plastic surface. It is a full material in its own right. Some call it vegan leather or bio-leather. At RebagCo, the position is simpler: not leather. Better.

How does plant leather compare to animal leather?

On feel and daily performance, the difference is smaller than most people expect. Quality plant-derived leather is water-resistant, holds its structure well, and develops a natural wear over time. Animal leather has an edge on raw longevity when properly maintained, though that gap narrows considerably with well-made plant leather.

Where the real difference shows is in the production. Conventional leather uses significant water and carbon in its making, and the tanning process typically involves chromium and other toxic chemicals. Plant-derived leather at RebagCo uses 93% less carbon and 97% less water than conventional leather, with no toxic chemicals and no microplastics. Animal leather Plant leather PU leather
Source Livestock hide Plant-based, 98% bio-based Petroleum plastic
Carbon footprint High 93% less than animal leather Medium-high
Water use Very high 97% less than animal leather Lower
Toxic chemicals Yes (tanning) None Some in production
Biodegradable Partially Yes No
Microplastics No No Yes, over time
Cruelty-free No Yes Yes

What about PU leather and faux leather?

This is where confusion is common, especially in India where the terms are used loosely. Most products sold as vegan leather or faux leather are made from PU, which stands for polyurethane, a petroleum-derived plastic. It is inexpensive to produce, but it cracks with use, does not biodegrade, and sheds microplastics over time.

Plant leather and PU leather are not the same. Plant leather is bio-based and biodegradable. PU leather is a plastic product with a leather-like surface. The word vegan on a label does not tell you which one you are buying. For a detailed comparison, read Plant Leather vs Vegan Leather: Why They're Not the Same.

Why plant-based leather is a better animal leather alternative

Animal leather comes at a high cost in water, carbon and animal welfare. PU leather trades animal welfare for a plastic product that degrades quickly and pollutes slowly. Plant-derived leather is a cleaner path on both counts.

Frequently asked questions

Is plant leather real leather?
Not in the traditional sense. Real leather means animal hide. Plant leather is a separate material category, bio-based and engineered to perform like leather but made from plant sources rather than animals.

Is plant leather better than animal leather?
On daily performance, quality plant leather is comparable. On environmental footprint, plant-derived leather uses 93% less carbon and 97% less water, involves no toxic tanning chemicals, and is biodegradable. For most buyers in India, it is the stronger choice.

Does plant leather feel like real leather?
Good quality plant-derived leather is close to animal leather in texture and flexibility. It is not identical, but the difference is smaller than most people expect before handling it.

Is plant leather the same as vegan leather?
Not necessarily. Vegan leather is a broad term that covers both plant-based leather and PU plastic leather. Plant leather is always vegan, but not all vegan leather is plant-based. Check the material composition, not just the vegan label.
